Got a publisher? Who ya gonna call?

There may light at the end of the can't-get-this-f***ing-game-released tunnel after all. Atari has picked up the rights for Ghostbusters after the whole Activision/Vivendi merger left the games original publisher Sierra in the cold. We can look forward to the next Ghostbusters installment "early next summer." Which in the gaming world means anytime from then to the summer after. The game is looking to be released to coincide with the first film's 25th anniversary. [kotaku]

Resistance 2 TV spot = cool. Weird - but cool

Sony has put together some strange, cool, weird, innovative?, intriguing ads and commercials in their gaming console lifetime. Ever see that ad with the thumb posing as a peenie? Yea probably not cause it was for foreign eyes only - we can't handle that kind of innuendo here. Either way here is the new TV spot for Resistance 2 nothing like a spooky kid whispering to get me to want to save up for the next few months and buy a PS3 so I can play it. Soon my time will come.

Portal: Still Alive breaks record - and probably your storage

This weeks Xbox Live Arcade title - Portal: Still Alive has broken the current XBLA size-cap of 350MB with its ridonkulous 629MB. I see your bandwidth and I raise you 300MB. Micro$oft's Aaron Greenberg commented - not so much about the game itself but about the cap increase: "We don't want to limit developers from a creative standpoint...So if they want to create bigger, more immersive-style games for digital distribution, [we] absolutely want to support that." He went on to comment about efficiency and size and gaming experience but that probably won't matter as storage space increases for our lovely beast machines as well as content - we can only expect games to get bigger. The Face of gaming - inching closer to reality

And to think Final Fantasy the movie was a big step for CGI and the way games could be produced. Well a company by the name of Image Metrics is taking it a step further and without the use of markers, make-up or specialized stages or sets. Just a video camera and their software can produce the most realistic images we've seen yet. IM has been around for awhile now and has done work in some major films and games - including doing work for the GTA series since San Andreas. Following the link to check out their latest video of realistic work. Its always the mouth.

Video games are half a century old this week

50 years ago this week video games were born. Thanks to a fella by the name of Robert Dvorak Sr. who at the time was working as an engineer in the instrumentation division of Brookhaven National Laboratory on Long Island. The first game, Tennis for Two, Dvorak put together using a colleagues, physicist William Higinbotham, designs' for an open house at the lab. Now there were a few "games" that came earlier but didn't encompass the video game basics that still stand today. For a good read check out the full article over at CBC. [cbc.com]

8-bit artist at it again! The art portion of 32 bit genocide

Our new friend (well in our minds he's our friend but he's never met us so who knows) and 8bit artist put together this video of him 8biting up an unsuspecting brick wall with some popular 8bit characters. This is apart of the 32 bit genocide which is a collection of art and music based on - you guessed it - video games. That - we can get behind.

[8bit Spotlight] Independent Developer: 7 Studios

We've decided it's time to shine some light on the small guys. In a new segment called [8bit Spotlight] we'll introduce you to a new independent developer every week, or other week, or month, or whenever we get to it - the kind of developers who don't have the moolah to make a blockbuster release, but could be or are behind some games you may play. First in the spotlight is 7 Studios who have developed a few known titles on major consoles. Games which include Shrek the Third, both Fantastic 4 titles and Pirates of the Caribbean: The legend of Jack Sparrow. For the second straight year 7 Studios, as the only independent game developer, has landed itself on the Inc. 5000 list  among the fastest growing businesses in America.

A Game You Can Believe In

It looks like Barack Obama is breaking new ground everywhere he steps these days, including video games. Senator Obama has recently taken out advertisements in Burnout Paradise. That's right he has taken up real-estate on your home console. So the next time you are cruising through the poorly named Paradise City at 300 miles per hour, make sure you look at the billboards because Barack is there waiting for you with a warm cup off cocoa,  gently willing you to make this shit country a slightly better one. Pause your game and get out to the polls November 4th. Thanks go to Jalopnik. Click here to see the advert.

The Future is upon us! Brain waves and gaming continued

Video games controlled by brain waves has been long a dream with minimal development over time. But we are getting closer and thanks to NeuroSky (sounds too much like SkyNet - which we all know how that ends) and Square Enix everyone was able to see a demo of a brain controlled game at the Tokyo Game Show this week. They've developed a simple headset that can be used to controller a players actions on screen. Not only is the setup simple its also pretty cheap. [ars technica / PC World]

GTbyCitroen Is Real, We Swear!

The above is a real car and the new definition of "bag of sex". It's called the GTbyCitroen and was codeveloped by the French automaker and Polyphony. You may know Polyphony for a little game they make called Gran Turismo. It's a perennial favorite around the [8bit] offices. Anyway, the two companies got together and poured all the hotness they could muster into the concept. Check out a full press release and many more pics over at Jalopnik.

Portion of Madden sales to breast cancer; Go boobies!

In a move that all of us here at the [8bit office] can get behind - EA has announced the release of Madden NFL '09 Pink - which has all the same features as Madden '09 except that a portion of sales will be donated to, the Deanna Favre Hope Foundation, a breast cancer charity. The title will be available throughout October to coincide with the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month - which honestly should be every month. Also included in this deal is Target who has the exclusive retail rights for Madden 09 Pink.
