Capcom follows EA's lead by partnering with DC comics

Days after DC Comics partnered with EA, they partnered with Capcom to work on two new series' based on Resident Evil and Devil May Cry. "Comics are a critical component in Capcom’s merchandising strategy for our most cherished franchises, as they target the same discerning, loyal fans that care most about these established brands," commented Germaine Giola, senior VP of licensing for Capcom. This seems like a natural progression for some major publishers to do, mostly because I'm sure a good majority of gamers are comic book fans. I'm also sure it's a cheaper way to expand an IP's story/universe making a game just another piece or moment in a characters life. [gamesindustry.biz]

Ghostbusters getting canned? Nooooooooo

In very disappointing news, especially here at the [8bit office], it seems Activision is canning the new Ghostbusters video game along with a few others. Activision Blizzard submitted their upcoming release schedule with no mention of the game along with 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand and Brutal Legend. Staff at High Moon Studios and Radical Entertainment will be seeing a realignment and Massive Entertainment and Swordfish studios are both possibly looking at closure or being sold. Activision publishing CEO Mike Griffith stated, "We are focused on improving efficiency across the combined organisation and are concentrating on businesses where we have leadership positions that are aligned with Activision Publishing's long-term corporate objectives." Prototype, Crash Bandicot and Ice Age all have solid release dates. [gamesindustry.biz]

UK prisons ban 18+ games. Wait, prisoners get consoles?

So you're telling me if I kill a guy I can get a PS3? For free? So the Prison Reform Trust has banned inmates in England and Wales from playing adult-rated games. Apparently games are "no substitute for purposeful activity like work or education classes." But if you're well behaved you may have a console and play kids games. What the in the name of all that is holy? I'm well behaved. Last year the gov't spent more than £10,000 on 80 Playstations and 15 Xboxes for young offender institutions. My brain just exploded all over my keyboard just now. They're prisoners right? Maybe in the UK prisoner translates to "person that should get whatever they want." Not sure though. My UK to make f**king sense converter isn't working right now. Prisoners shouldn't get shit. Just a thought.

EA teams with DC Comics

Oh Electronic Arts. If we didn't have you - we wouldn't have anyone to be mad at. So EA, after signing a deal with United Talent Agency in a move to slowly become too big, has teamed up with DC comics. Apparently DC will be publishing a comic based on the upcoming game Mirror's Edge. The first issue will be distributed at Comic Con in San Dee-ah-go, the whale's vagina. EA used to have a deal with Marvel comics and had worked on a few projects, but that deal was terminated earlier this year.

L-A-W-S-U-I-T: and a triple word score

Ok. So this might be a tad of a stretch for us, but I do know a lot of people who are addicted to Scrabulous, and thats a funny picture. Apparently the makers of Scrabulous, the Facebook application, are getting sued by Hasbro, stating that the game infringes on its Scrabble IP rights. And have requested that the application be removed. Hasbro has partnered with EA, of course, to create digital versions of its IP, which lead to a legit version of Scrabble being released earlier this month. [gamesindustry.biz]

Max Payne Poster...actually cool?

Welcome to a world without rules. How in God's name are they marketing this film so well? I know for a fact it is going to be terrible. I just know it. Trust me. Yet, the trailer peaked my interest and now this surprisingly cool poster is assaulting me, vying for a spot to be framed on my wall. I can't believe that Hollywood is going to squeeze another ten bucks out of my pocket. Don't they know I have a wedding coming up? Oh wait, yeah they know. I owe them my first born from a few years back. Anyway, click the link for the other poster which thankfully looks like a rejected shot from Boondock Taints 2. A hearty thanks to aintitcoolnews.com for this info.

Guitar Zero

The entire set list of the upcoming Guitar Hero World Tour has been leaked. Either that or some self proclaimed music nerd with too much time on his hands has some pretty tepid to horrible taste in what "rocks." There are a few highlights along the way (a great Queens of the Stone Age track, and an entire Tool set) but all in all this a lousy list. Please, no more Blue Oyster Cult, I have suffered enough cow bell related jokes around a cheap bottle of pinot noir to last a life time. I have attached a full breakdown of the list. Take a peak and we can start our collective dream about Rock Band 2. The internet is knows for its deceit, so take this list with a grain of sulfur. Click the link to see the full list in all its subpar glory.

Consoles dead in 10 years? Just another Wild Tangent

At the Casual Connect Game conference in Seattle this past week, WildTangent's fearless leader, Alex St John is predicting that consoles will be dead in 10 years or as he put it "extinct" by 2020. Of course if the Mayan calendar has anything to say about it, it'll be more like 4 years. Some other fantastic comments include, "We are looking at the last generation of consoles right now," and "I am going to predict to you that the PS3, the Wii and the Xbox are the last generation of consoles that you either see or that anybody regards as successful in the market." He has some other gems on SeattlePI. Now I understand why they call the company WildTangent. I think I'd be more impressed by the prediction if it was within 5 years. But I guess his prediction is so far away that saying ridiculous stuff now helps in the PR department. [videogaming247] [ more.. ]

Warner to bring us downloadable Watchmen titles

As you would expect, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment is working on 2 downloadable games based on the upcoming Watchmen film. Which I saw the trailer for before Dark Knight and it looks pretty amazing. Taking advantage of the flexibility of digital delivery, one title will be released with the film in March '09 and the second will coincide with the DVD release of the film.  Samantha Ryan, senior VP of production for Warner says "We don't want a low quality console game that will get lost at retail," and "A downloadable game allows us to deliver the experience that fans expect." Of course, if this model works Warner plans to produce more titles using digital delivery. AKA - if it makes them a boat load of money. [gamesindustry.biz]

Wii-kly update: pirates or aliens?

In the age old battle between pirates and ninjas - I'm going pirates. Wenches, mead, booty, ships, guns, parrots, and wenches, for me, out weighs the constant training a ninja has to do. It also wins in this weeks update to the WiiShop. For WiiWare we have Pirates: The Key of Dreams vs two side scrolling Genesis titles. Again, I'm going pirates.

WiiWare

Pirates: The Key of Dreams (Oxygen Games, 1-4 players, Rated E for Everyone-Mild Violence, 1,000 Wii Points)

Virtual Console

Super Fantasy Zone  (Sega Genesis, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone-Mild Cartoon Violence, 900 Wii Points)

Gley Lancer (Sega Genesis, 1 player, Rated E10+ for Everyone 10 and Older-Mild Suggestive Themes, Mild Fantasy Violence, 900 Wii Points)

BSG writers and original concept guys on new Aliens game

oh baby. I think I can speak for everyone here at the [8bit office] but I can't wait for this new Aliens game, Aliens: Colonial Marines. Gearbox are the ones behind this expansion of the Aliens universe and recently discussed the creative team that is making it happen. Besides the awesome fact that they are working with some of the original concept artists from the films, they have the writers behind the Battlestar Galactica series. Oh and there's 4 player co-op. Wii teams up with FujiFilm for a photo service

Nintendo has teamed up with Fujifilm to offer a new online photo service. The new feature allows console users to upload and print photos via the old www, of course. Users will be able to create and order individual prints, photo albums and name cards that can show a photo or a Mii. Orders will be processed by Fujifilm and Wii points cannot be used to place an order. Right now this feature is only available in Japan but will go worldwide soon. [gamesindustry.biz]

Watch out, EA is coming to Hollywood

ugh EA. EA signed a deal with Hollywood talent reps United Talent Agency with plans of moving into large budget movies and TV. This following deals made for a movie based on The Sims (wow, that doesn't sound stupid at all), an animated DVD accompanying the launch of IP Dead Space and a cartoon TV series of MySims. Just another move to make it an EA universe. mu hahah mu hahaha

Get Your Wii Classic Controller Before They're Banned!

Until a $21 million lawsuit gets settled in Texas, the judge would like a whole bunch of Nintendo controllers removed from store shelves. Better stock up. Many more details can be found at Bloomberg.com.
