PS3 to get movie download service soon

Something we all saw coming sooner or later is now happening. Sony has confirmed that they will be launching a movie download service for the PS3 this summer. Official timings are expected next month. With this the PS3 can now be a direct rival to Xbox Live, which currently has movies and TV content from a host of partners including MTV, Warner Bros., Paramount and National Geographic. Oh and there's more...as an extra to those with internet connected Bravia LCD tvs in the US, Sony Pictures will offer the new Will Smith movie Hancock in November before its available on DVD. This just to show Sony's commitment to networked products. As much as I like Will Smith I don't see that helping to make it a better movie...but that's for another blog: 35mmreview.com. Sony phone rumors abound

Sony is looking to have a Playstation-branded phone which could hit the shelves by Chirstmas '09. The phone would incorporate elements of the PSP making it a great competitor to others on the market that either already have, or are beginning to exlpore, gaming. This phone would not be in conjunction with Sony Ericsson due to the partnership becoming "frosty" and Sony has said it would "never give its Playstation branding" to the Sony Ericsson join venture. Analysts say it would be "relatively easy" to convert the PSP as it already has a wi-fi setup. Could be interesting but I'm more interested in seeing who the wireless carrier would be, and how many times it will brick with updates. [Marketing Week]

Mildly amusing, caught during a DVRed episode of Squidbillies.

Retro (Old) Games With Photo Backgrounds

Someone someplace spent a lot of time overlaying oldass videogame action onto corresponding photographs. The results are pretty damn cool. Check out the whole gallery here. [fubiz]

COD5: Another WWII game and declaring war on the competition

So there are a couple of things here: Call of Duty 5: World at War will be set in WWII, again...and will apparently redefine the WWII genre. Treyarch, the developer, insists that COD5 basically will be F'n awesome. Stating that it will capitalize on the success of COD4 and will be the best shooter on the market. Ballsy, but after playing COD4...I believe them. They have the engine and technology in place...now its just everything else. Although, I enjoyed WWII the first three times, a fourth installment might be, oh whats the phrase I'm looking for....stretching it? Either way I'm sure in terms of game play and action, if they stick with the feel of COD4, it will kick ass. Call of Duty: World at War official site.

Wii Update: Virtual Console + WiiWare

A game where you play "rock, paper, scissors" to defeat the enemy (sounds intense, but I guess that's about as intense as it got in the 80's), high speed ships attacking aliens and a good ole fashion side-scrolling-hand-to-hand-combat action game enter the Virtual Console and WiiWare this week. For full descriptions view the full post.

Beatles entering video game world? HELP!

According to a report from Financial Times, Beatles representatives are in talks with Activision and MTV, the folks respectively behind Guitar Hero and Rock Band, to create a Beatles-themed video game. (Please don't let it be a Help video game, please don't let it be a Help video game.) I'm a fan of the Beatles just as much as the next guy but at some point you need to know when to say no. But I guess when you can make more money off something why not. Of course there is the legal side, any potential deal would need to be cleared by EMI, the folks that own the master recordings of the Beatles, and Apple Corps, the ones that manage the Beatles business interests. Hopefully the talks are just about adding songs to the Guitar Hero and / or Rock Band list. I couldn't imagine playing as Ringo, in a 4 person co-op, while battling through crazed fans with drums sticks to get to the stage to play a show. Actually...that's not a bad idea...

Attn: Geeks! The Wii storage issue will be addressed

Nintendo is running into some storage complaints and misunderstandings. People are saying the 512Mb of flash memory isn't enough for their saved games and downloadable content and with the launch of WiiWare the space is running thin. Now, the misunderstanding part - Nintendo's Managing Director of Marketing, Laurent Fischer, commented on the storage complaints and stated that it would only be an issue for "geeks and otaku." Oops. Really? You're in marketing right? This of course caused a ruckus among "hardcore" gamers and one industry person, God of War designer, David Jaffe, who says Fischers' comments, if true, "reek of junior high school vibe immaturity bullshit." It seems Jaffe and Fischer went to the same junior high then. Lets face it, if you worry about things like Hollywood ruining your favorite comic book hero or storage space for your video games, you're a geek - I know and Ironman was F'n awesome. Fischer has since appologized for the comments. Among other points in Fischer's comments, other than calling us all what we are, Nintendo has no plans of adopting an external hard drive for storage, but they do realize it is an issue and all of Japan is working on it now so we can save our Wii faces. New PS3 controller in the works

Rumor has it that Sony is working on a 'break apart' controller for the PS3. Something similar to the Wii remote, where the controller will break apart into two separate units with motion sensing functionality. No official announcement date has been set but it is believed that the controller has been supplied to certain developer partners. The addition of this controller could help Sony reach similar gaiming audiences the Wii has had such success with. This in combination of the Playstation Network, the success of the Blu-Ray, the roll out of Home later in the year and release of additional high def games will make it the best all around home entertainment unit on the market. But will continue to be too expensive for any of us here at the 8bit offices to own sooo it doesn't really matter. To us, that is. [gamesindustry.biz]

Ninja Theory: creating blockbusters or games?

Ninja Theory, the UK based developer that created Heavenly Sword and some other game, is blending the line between video games and film. They recently stated that they could make a movie like Beowulf for 20% of the cost. I wonder if that includes 20% of the suck. Ninja Theory is quietly working on a game that they also want to create a movie tie in with. Stating that the transition wouldn't be that hard considering they would have all the hi-res assets from creating the game they could easily create a movie from. uhhh to me this sounds like a great idea on paper, but I have a feeling it would suck. It's bad enough that Hollywood has a hard time making good movies as it is, I don't see a two game-independent video game developer will help in that regard. Stick with what you know, boys. There is an interesting interview with Ninja Theory's creative director and co-founder, Tameem Antoniades here, where he goes further into the transition from 3-D gaming to film.

Red vs Blue: Choose wisely

According to a study done by scientists from the University of Copenhagen in Denmark your team color can affect your chances of winning. This leaving relative skills aside. Based on results from 1347 online matches, 55% of the matches were won by the red team. Leading neuroscientist, Mihai Moldovan, concluded that the color red "may act as a psychological distractor for men, possibly because men flush and turn red when they are angry." Epic's Mark Rein has noted that as interesting as this is, because really it is, don't anticipate any immediate changes to team colors, just because the colors have been ingrained in the Unreal Tournament series for years. What I find interesting is they only used men for the study? Gotta love science and numbers.

WTF You're Driving In GTA

We here at [8bit] really like the car nuts at Jalopnik. They aren't kidding when they call themselves obsessed. We especially like that, as we do, they constantly stretch what it means to cover the auto industry. Hell, they were all over Iron Man because there were a few classics in his garage. Today they've focused their attention on GTA IV and its vast selection of automobiles. Check out their extensive listing of the real life influences for the rides you can steal, race, crash, and generally hoon it up in around Liberty City. [Jalopnik]

Sony, IGA and EA...oh my!

I've always been interested with the in-game advertising, seeing where it is and where it might go. Well this recent agreement by Sony, IGA, and EA, (by the way can we get a break from EA, really?) shows the movement of in-game advertising and how important some big players think it is. IGA signed a two year agreement with EA to become the media company's exclusive global, dynamic in-game advertising partner for PS3 titles, which include:  Madden NFL, NBA LIVE, NASCAR and NHL hockey. "IGA's dynamic in-game advertising platform allows for in-game ad elements to be updated in real time, keeping ads fresh and relevant to each gamer. EA works closely with IGA to ensure that advertising is placed appropriately within the game environment in order to reflect an authentic gaming experience." I'm sure.

IGA - they have a pretty interesting video to start

oh, and I have more...
