Term 'Gamer' loosing meaning with mainstream gaming

It's surprising that even in the economic situation the world is currently in video games somehow managed to not only stay afloat in sales but actually see an increase towards the end of '08. That mixed with the popularity of the Wii among everyone - not just gamers - has caused a shift in how the industry is viewing its customers. Its not just the "lack-of-sunlight-stuck-in-my-mom's-basement" consumer anymore - now gaming is appealing to the masses. With that is a change on how gaming is marketed and to who - which is obvious, but what isn't as obvious yet is the effect these changes will take on the games themselves. Large audience usually leads to a diluted market of crap all looking the same just to make a buck. The New York Times has a surprisingly short article about the booming industry and how the term 'Gamer' could be on its way out as a way to identify consumers. Basically saying the demographic isn't as specified as it once was.

Nintendo Cartoon Hour

I'm sure you've heard the lovely tune "I'm on a Boat" by the boys from The Lonely Island or the hit "Jizz in my Pants" if haven't you should probably climb out from under that rock you're under and start googling stuff. Until then enjoy this pretty funny narrated clip of various 8bit classics mixed together.

Some more Lost Planet 2 for you

Monday Lost Planet 2 was announced exclusively through Xbox Live by Jun Takeuchi with a cool trailer of what to expect. Some more details about the game include 4 player co-op, new interlinked episodes and deep customization to really get players immersed. Story wise LP2 takes place 10 years after the original title and as you can tell by the trailer the frozen tundra of an environment has changed. The original hero Wayne Holden has been replaced by player's own customized snow pirates. Players will move through different stories creating unique adventures. This concept will allow players to experience the plot in a more dynamic way as it unfolds from various perspectives. Going by the trailer released the other day LP2 looks pretty epic.

Terminator Salvation Game Details + short film rant

This might be on the long side but I just want to get all of this out of the way in one shot so I don't have to do it again. So to go along with the blockbuster film Terminator Salvation  (directed by Charlie's Angels / Music Video guru McG - ughhhh - and starring "your-in-my-f**ing-shot" C. Bale - don't worry we still love you) will be of course a game of the same name. Due out May 2009 the video game will be a third person shooter where players take on the role of John Connor and battle against big bad Skynet. Story wise it takes place two years before the events of the film. Sold yet? Well Common, Moon Bloodgood and Rose McGowan are lending their likeness and voices for the title. Well, I'm sold. Film wise, my expectations are low. The trailers look good but McG scares me as a director of a series once helmed by James Cameron. But this isn't a film blog. Most likely the game will suck - just look at all the parties involved on development. On the bright side for the film - cool viral marketing.

Exclusive Red Xbox 360 Resident Evil Limited Edition Console

As another marketing ploy Microsoft has announced a Red Xbox 360 Resident Evil Limited Edition Console. I'm not sure who actually buys these limited edition systems but it's in celebration of the landmark series coming to Xbox. The limited edition console will be available the same day Resident Evil 5 ships to store shelves - Friday March 13th - and all the limited edition suckers can pick up the bundle. It's basically a red elite system with a copy of RE5. woo I guess the one up side is now the Red Ring of Death won't stand out as much. ooooo ouch.

Lost Planet 2 Heats Up

The original Lost Planet, in my opinion, is a hugely underrated game. I truly think that if reviewers took the time to play that game on the hardest difficulty level, the reviews would be singing a different tune. Playing through that game with a friend was some of the best gaming I have had this generation. It was like flashing back to my sleepover filled youth. The only difference is that we supplanted Miller High Life for Pepsi and my wife for my mom. Oedipal much?

Moving on, Resident Evil 5 producer Jun Takeuchi made a pit stop to Xbox Live to announce Lost Planet 2. From the looks of it, the barren icy tundra of the first game has been replaced with a lush looking jungle. Thanks go to Kotaku for the video.

Free Titan Pack for Unreal Tournament 3 announced

Midway and Epic Games have officially announced the FREE Titan Pack coming to PC and the PS3 March 5. The Titan Pack will introduce 11 new multiplayer maps for Deathmatch, CTF, Vehicle CTF and Warfare mode plus 8 popular maps from the first UT3 bonus pack and 360 version. Players will also experience two new game modes: Greed mode, which is a 'tug of war' style kill points battle and a Betrayal mode, which is exactly what it sounds like - a cutthroat style of play allowing alliances and teams to shift fluidly through a match.

New Time Trial Maps for Mirror's Edge

Dice has released an all new time trial map pack for download for PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. The maps are bare bones - no guns, no cops and no city - just you and the course. PS3 owners will have access to an additional map for download. Of course all times can be uploaded to the Mirror's Edge leaderboard. But even cooler is tomorrow players can have the chance to experience Faith in 2D when a hand-crafted animation and old school platform style game by Brad Borne goes live at www.mirrorsedge2d.com.

EA announces Dead Space Extraction for Wii

EA has announced today an all new chapter in the Dead Space saga. A Wii exclusive FPS, Dead Space Extraction will be a prequel that will reveal the events leading up to Isaac Clarke's mission on the USG Ishimura. The title will introduce a new heroine and all new characters that fall victim to a mysterious contagion aboard the ship. Along with new characters DSE will have new weapons, enemies, puzzles and a co-op multiplayer gameplay. EA Redwood Shores is behind the title and it's scheduled to ship in Fall 2009.

Show off your Street Fighter Cred on that next purchase

Yes its true. Capcom and Visa have teamed together to bring you this - your geekdom spread across a PRE-paid card. Lame. You can also get a Resident Evil 5 one but only the folks at your local video game store will think its cool. I can't say too much I do have a Van Gogh painting on my card - but that's art damnit. Where is the 8bit line?  Why can't we get some Mario or Megaman cards out there? Or a background that says don't do it - you're already over your limit jackass. If you're interested in grabbing one of these head over to Capcom Unity Card Official Site.

8bit Paper City

File under [8bit Cool Stuff]. Artist/graphic designer Ashley Buerkett from Illinois has brought the 2D side scrolling world of Mario into a 3D plane. Titled 'Paper City' this rendering of the Mushroom Kingdom is set to look like a board game, but I don't think its actually playable - if it is - it looks like a short game. Check out more images on the Behance Network and for more info and work from Ashley check out her official site - she has done some great work.

PAX Coming to Boston?

I was reading Penny Arcade today during my regular Friday ritual (I suggest you do the same) and came across an interested God sized tidbit posted by Tycho about PAX possible coming to our hometown.

"I suggested on Wednesday that we never get to stay anywhere long enough to get a solid reading, but I didn't need to be in Boston very long before it felt normal.  We toured the Hynes Center yesterday in an effort to imagine PAX filling that space in March of 2010, and I think it will work. "

This is great great news. I truly hope this comes to fruition. I have nothing but respect, admiration and writhing tummy stick for these boys. We will keep you posted. [8bit] Street Team: Hiring 2010.

A Couture Campaign Aimed At Us? Huh?

Haute couture merchant Lanvin's new print campaign is apparently directed at us. Girls with weird make-up in custom dresses surrounded by Pacman and Invaders imagery firing Lego guns. Who else could they be trying to sell their custom wares to but us? See the rest of the shots here.

F.E.A.R. Cats HO!

To promote F.E.A.R 2: Project Origin, the team at Mischief PR are hitting the streets of London with spcially trained black cats in what they say is the first "superstitious ad campaign". Is anyone actually superstitious anymore? I thought all that shit was debunked way back. Anyway, read more about it here. [via NOTCOT]

Watchmen Arcade game

We're just as pumped for this movie as you are, we also love viral marketing and little easter eggs that go along with cool movies like this. Of course with the film will be a release of a console title and a mobile game. But as much as we love the fancy graphics and gameplay of new games we still love the arcade classics. If you're looking for some more Watchmen cool stuff check out minutemenarcade.com where you play as an original Minute Men and "fight your way through the crime-riddled streets of New York 1942 and defeat the evil mastermind Moloch!" Brought to by of course Veidt Enterprises. [via Ben]
