[8bit Review] Mirror's Edge

The intro-
Mirror's Edge, much like Dead Space, is another original IP from EA, that got a lot of hype with it's new approach to an already well established genre. Mirror's Edge hopes to put a new spin to the aging FPS genre by increasing the amount of bodily control that you have over the main character. Mirror's Edge is set in a government controlled dystopian society that is visually similar to the sterile vistas of the Matrix Reloaded. You play the part of Faith, a strong female character and on-the-go metaphor that is a part of an underground group of 'messengers' who complain about "The Man" but don't do anything but run from it (like a recent college graduate)....

Raising Proper Robot Maintenance and Prosthetic Awareness, I Swear.

No, this doesn't have anything to do with videogames. I came across the above image this morning, part of a series by photographer Tamar Levine and photoshopper Rob Sheridan, and was pretty well  by itstruck. Surely this is the kind of imagery we're exposed to quite a bit through our XBoxes and PS3. Here it is brought to highly detailed life. I'll be interested to see where the series goes. See more at Tamar's photoblog here.

Missy in the blue dress came across my desktop a few weeks ago, via NOTCOT. She's a very appealing way to display the potential for well-designed prosthetic devices. You can read more about the one she's modeling, called the Immaculate, here.

Guitar Hero: Metallica track list and some

I'm personally getting sick of Guitar Hero and Rock Band. Don't get me wrong - they're a blast to play with friends - I'm just getting sick of hearing about how amazing they are. So to completely contradict myself I'm doing a post about the new Guitar Hero Metallica edition and give you a heads up of some tracks that will be available. The complete set will feature over 45 tracks from all of Metallica's albums and a few non-Metallica tracks that influenced the band. Just don't play them in front of others or Lars will be up your ass. I'd post the list here but it's pretty long so I'm sorry but you're going to have to "follow the link" or "after the jump" or whatever cool keywords blogs use to get you to keep clicking.

Steampunk MMORPG NeoSteam taking Europe

Steampunk, another [8bit Favorite], has reached a new level with NeoSteam a 3D MMORPG that falls in line with your Everquests and WOW except its steampunk. It actually looks pretty cool and a European version has recently started. And if you're in the Europe area and signed up for the US version your character can be transported to the new servers and game. How's that for service? I'll be honest I'm not one for the MMORPG - but I also haven't played one in awhile so who knows.

Resident Evil 5 Hands-On

I figured I should post a hands-on of Resident Evil 5 for all of you poor saps that only have a PS3 (or gasp! An Xbox Live Silver account). First off, let me say, the game is stunning. It is one of the most visually impressive games that I have seen this generation. Sadly, other than a nice coat of paint and a little bit of co-op Resident Evil 5 is essentially... [ more.. ]

Go Ninja Go Ninja Go! New TMNT game to mark 25th anniversary

Our green friends in a half shell are back! Today Ubisoft has announced that it will launch an all new, original TMNT title as a "Shell-ebration" (no i did not come up with that) of their 25th anniversary. It will be the first TMNT game to not be tied in with a movie, comic book or TV show. The four player action fighting title is being developed by Game Arts - the team behind the critically acclaimed Super Smash Bros. Brawl for Wii. Scheduled to release in autumn 2009 along with toys, lunchboxes, keychains and TMNT flamethrowers.

New Indiana Jones trailer - when its coming out who knows

Waiting for this new Indiana Jones title is like waiting for grandma to get out of the car. You just want to say hurry up you old poodle! Rumors are abound as to when its coming out. Trailers and gaming sites say spring 2009 with confidence but as we all know spring 2009 in the gaming world actually means sometime in 2009. Either way check out this new trailer which will get you really excited about something that has TBD slapped across its face.

MGS 4 adds a new online mission - available Jan. 27

Konami is going to release a new team based game mode for its Metal Gear Online title. The new Bomb Mission mode will be available to all Metal Gear online users. In the new mission teams are charged with destroying or protecting an area on the game map. Players either plant timed explosives in the city and protect the bomb until it goes off or deactivate the explosive with a coolant solution. This placed inside a tight time limit and you have yourself a tense little battle. The new Bomb Mission Mode will be available on Tuesday, January 27th. (Tomorrow for those without a calendar)

Call your bookie - Madden 09 predicts Super Bowl winner

According to Madden 09's simulation of the Super Bowl the Pittsburgh Steelers will win a tight game over the Arizona Cardinals 28-24. Giving the Steelers their 6th title as a franchise. Since 2004 when it first started - Madden simulated Super Bowls have picked the actual champs 4 out of 5 times. Of course until...dun dun dun....last year's epic Giants defeat over the Pats. I'm not a fan of either team - but I'm pulling for the Cardinals.

[adult swim] games - something to do when bored at work

[adult swim] is easily our favorite late night watch and if you haven't been to their site recently they're also doing some really cool and totally ridiculous flash based games. They just released Ultimate Vending Machine Challenge - just go check it out. If I tried to explain it - like trying to explain anything [adult swim] related - I'd sound like I was tripping on acid. They have a bunch of other free games as well including my personal favorites: Five Minutes To Kill (Yourself)Viva Caligula, and Orphan Feast.

Game over man! Game over!

Game over man! Game over! This past week has brought upon the failure of three of my friends’ 360s. 1 Elite and 2 launch systems. So folks, that it makes a clean sweep. Every single one of my friends has red ringed now. 12 out of 12 of Tim’s friends agree Microsoft has a hell of a hard time with hardware. I have personally posted in detail about my ordeals with Microsoft here and here. So I know this isn’t ground breaking news, but I just had to post something since the failure rate among my game loving adult friends just reached 100%. One thing is for sure; the next time I buy Microsoft hardware I am buying a Best Buy service contract with it (the horror). To think I bought my launch system on Ebay.

The Movies That Inspired MGS

The Japanese equivalent of Best Buy has put up a list of the movies that apparently inspired Metal Gear Solid mastermind Hideo Kojima. The list is dominated by action (duh) with some sci-fi thrown in for good measure. Chances are also quite high you'll find one of these films playing in the [8bit] offices. For Tsutaya's page about the list, click here. I hope you can read japanese. If you can't here's the list in sweet, sweet american. The Guns of Navarone. The Great Escape. Goldfinger. 2001. Planet of the Apes. The Deer Hunter. Dawn of the Dead. Full Metal Jacket. Predator. Die Hard. Heat. Black Hawk Down. Children of Men. The Bourne Identity. Casino Royale. [/film]

What Ever Happened To The Dark Knight Game?

I have to admit that I'd totally forgot there was a game tied to The Dark Knight until I read this article over at Kotaku. First it was going to be released with the film hit theaters, then it was delayed to line up with the home video product hitting stores. It never arrived. Kotaku's story is an in-depth investigation and retelling of what actually happened, from initial idea to getting the ax. Definitely worth the read.
