[8bit Impressions] Borderlands

Cool cover art - sadly that's how I sometimes feel when I'm playing Borderlands. BL was pulling big punches as an FPS / RPG hybride, a sweet 4 player co-op title, and just a massive title in general. Then came the drastic art style change in the middle of development. This wasn't a small change by no means, this completely altered the look of the game. A look that, honestly, I was not a fan of when first seeing but has slowly grown on me as a standout style. Overall I'm not disappointed with Borderlands I'm still logging in hours but after getting over the bazillion guns, art style, co-op and FPS/RPG mix, I'm left with a feeling of something is missing to making this post-apocalyptic/Mad Max title perfect....

[8bit Impressions] Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

So after another slight hiatus from the [8bit World] I'm making another attempt at a comeback, again. Now I know what it feels like to be Brett Favre - minus the Hall of Fame arm, tons of money, and a winning team. Anyways, lately my time has been consumed by that thing called a job. Any moment I'm not doing that - I've been tacking on some hours in the gaming world. My recent exploits have ranged from revisiting Dead Space, starting on a new path in Borderlands (impression coming soon) and going into a ridiculous online slump in NHL 10. Also in that mix has been, and what prompts this impression, a little PS3 title called Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. [ more.. ]

[8bit Impressions] X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Lately I've had a combination of nothing of interest to write about and just being plain out lazy. I'm hoping doing this [8bit Impression] will snap me out of it. It also helps that I have a night off of work and finally have a night to sit back and play some video games. I'm currently downloading the Wet demo for PS3 and drinking a Yuengling in between rounds of NHL 10. Almost a perfect night. Anyways, onto my impression of X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

[8bit Impressions] EA NHL 10 + Madden 10, One is a 10 the Other an 09

NHL 10

I recently picked up NHL 10 for Xbox 360 and Madden 10 for PS3 - it's the year of the 10, well at least for one of these titles. I haven't bought a Madden game since '07, but did play some '09, and it seems not much has changed other than some tweaks to the franchise mode and the gameplay. Actually some of the tweaks aren't better and end up making this game very mechanical and flat. As compared to NHL 10 - Madden doesn't compare and definitely doesn't do it's sport justice when put side to side. Which is strange you think these different EA studios could chat about how they approach development.

[8bit Impressions] Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood

Call of Juarez Bound in Blood

"More tequila and a woman of questionable moral character." Not sure I can count the number of times I've uttered that line. I usually get the first part which never leads to the second part. But that is just one of the many great lines Ray McCall has in this fun and well executed sequel. The original COJ was a bargain bin picker for me and was a perfect one at that - it was ok and that was it. COJ: BIB has greatly improved on the original and it's lack of being a solid title to being a standalone good game.

[8bit Impressions] inFamous

Oooo big exclusive. I feel like there was alot of hype around inFamous but at the same time it felt like everyone wasn't sure or were indifferent to it being good. After reading a bit more about the title and Sucker Punch I started to hype myself up about it and I got excited. Then I played it and now I feel indifferent towards it. inFamous starts out great - title screen, hit start, boom. You're right into the story. Nothing else. No menus - nothing. Just an explosion and wonder about what is going on or where this story is going. If there is one thing inFamous has going for itself it's the story arc and intrigue. I was immediately interested in what was going on and actually getting to the bottom of it and mixed with very cool artistic graphic novel cutscenes made it that much more interesting. Too bad that is all that really stands out...

[8bit Impressions] Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 Wii

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10

Golf. Golf man. Golf. It must it must be the summer lull, because I am playing a friggin golf game. The last golf game I played was Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2007 for the Xbox 360 and that was primarily for achievement points. The game bored me to tears and I never finished a full round. I grew up in Western Massachusetts and actually spent a fair amount of my youth out on the links. I am by no means a great golfer, but I get by, and I enjoy it. That being said, I have never played a video game that made me even remotely feel like I was playing an actual game of golf, until now. [ more.. ]

[8bit Impressions] [Prototype]

Prototype

If you are wondering why this is an “impressions” and not a review, it’s because we actually take the time to enjoy our games as opposed to some other sites. And that my friends, is one of the reasons games like Assassins Creed and Prototype occasionally don’t get the credit they deserve. Sure we could blast through all of our games on easy, ignoring side quests and achievements, but one of the benefits of not having a deadline, is having the ability to enjoy being a gamer while affording us the opportunity to give you, the reader a honest, less jaded opinion.

Batman Arkham Asylum, Albeit Short, First Impression

Batman Arkham Asylum

Today I was out and about running some errands when my trip took me to Target to pick up a new TV stand. The old bass amp as a tv stand isn't cutting it anymore. As I was making my around the always hectic Target on a Saturday - I came across the electronics section. Which is directly across from the toy section - by the way the new throw back GI JOE toys - awesome. I always peruse the electronic section - it's just instinct. As I walked through the gaming aisle I noticed a demo up for the PS3. As I inspected closer - I realized it was a Batman Arkham Asylum demo. My first thought was holy shit it's out, but what happened to the late August release? I quickly scanned the games and realized what I thought was a random gem find - wasn't. But I did get a chance to check out the demo... [ more.. ]

Ghostbusters: The Video Game First Impressions

Ghostbusters

I figure I'd do a 'first impression' of the new Ghostbusters video game rather than wait for a full review because that could be months from now. My roommate picked up a copy this morning for PS3 and rubbed it in my face, through a quick gchat, that he was "busting ghosts" while I was at work. He's a good friend, really. His quick synopsis through short text blasts in the chat box were basically - yea it's fun. Which honestly I think is all one can expect with this title - pure fun. Like the films. As soon as I got home from work I pwned a burrito and fired up the new game. So far so good, everything is how it should be and more importantly how I expect it to be. Original music - nice. Nods to the original movies here and there - nice, I can feel the nostaglia. Original actors with decent dialogue - we might be onto something...
