Rock Band Bar Nights; Get Drunk Look Even More Like An Ass

Just when you thought karaoke couldn't get any worse - enter Rock Band Bar Nights. Now going to the bar will be completely unbearable as you listen to drunken idiots screw up your favorite songs in even more annoying fashion through Rock Band. Not sure if you've actually heard drunk people play Rock Band but I have - it's like watching a one-armed man shovel snow, fucking painful. Well the great folks at MTV and Harmonix have to decided to setup a program for bars to host their own Rock Band Nights and will provide exclusive content and product offerings - like getting 5 songs from the upcoming Rock Band Beatles earlier than the release date. This sounds like a marketing win win situation for everyone - except the listeners who are just there to wash away their lives with some of grandpa's cough medicine. For more info check out the Rock Band Bar Nights official site.

Ubisoft To Talk Games and Film at Comic Con Today

Today around 1:45pm at Comic Con in San Diego (refrain from Ron Burgundy joke, refrain) Ubisoft is going to lead up a panel discussion entitled "Assassin's Creed II: Video Games and Hollywood Converge." While this doesn't mean too much to us or most of you, mostly because we're not in San Diego and don't have Comic Con passes, it does bring up some interesting thoughts. The panel discussion will be about the evolution of entertainment creation and distribution while touching on the bridge that is being built between video games and film. Panel hosts include Yannis Mallat, CEO at Ubisoft Montreal and Pierre Raymond, founder and CEO of Hybride Technologies, the visual effects studio behind 300 and Sin City. At E3 Ubisoft announced that Hybride Tech was working on a series of short films for AC II which during this panel discussion they will preview a teaser trailer of production  and development shots from filming. They will also have a first public demo of AC II.

EA and Dark Horse Comics Team Up For Mass Effect Comic Series

Dark Horse Comics

And the trend continues...this time with Bioware, a studio of EA, and Dark Horse Comics announcing a new comic book series based on the hit game Mass Effect. The sci-fi comic will act as a prequel that will bridge together Mass Effect and the mysterious beginning of Mass Effect 2. The comic entitled Mass Effect: Redemption, cause it sounds cool, is scheduled to launch January 6, 2010. The story will be penned by Lead Writer Mac Walters at BioWare. While John Jackson Miller (Star Wars KOTOR, The Invincible Iron Man) will do the scripting and Omar Francia (Star Wars Legacy) will handle the drawing. The 4 part series will explore new locations, aliens and enemies of course.

EA and DC Team Up For Dante's Inferno Comic

Dante's Inferno

Visceral Games, a step-child of EA Inc, has announced that they will be collaborating with DC Comics to create a Dante's Inferno comic book mini-series. The six comic min-series will be available in Decemeber of '09 but will make its debut at Comic Con this week.  Also, at the Comic Con event Visceral Games is going to preview the trailer of Dante's Inferno animated feature which will coincide with the release of the game next year. The comic will be illustrated by Diego Latorre (The Incredible Hulk) and written by Christos Gage (X-Men/Spider-Man/Wildcats).

Hey Advertisers - It's All About the Indie Games

While game development costs for triple-A titles, like Halo and GTA, start reaching into the budgets of major films (GTA IV estimated at $100 mil - about the same for Starship Troopers, Terminator 2, Minority Report among others) so does their need advertising dollars. We've commented before on in-game advertising and everyone has an opinion on the matter from it effecting gameplay to the once independent industry selling out. Well to grow you kind of have to sell out in some form. In steps indie games. Titles like "The World of Goo", “Braid” or any indie titles found on PSN or XBL are starting to stake a claim in the gaming landscape with their 'casual' popularity. Speaking of popularity have you heard of this thing called the iPhone? Thought so – seems like 1+1=$$ for advertisers and developers.

The big issue is getting that placement or making it work for the developer and the game itself. It would be a bit obvious if the hero had to blast cans of Pepsi to reach the next level that something was up. But with digitally distributed titles cutting out the large middle aged man - something the music industry has been dealing with for awhile now - means a nice direct to consumer relationship for developers. It also means there is room for piracy and loss of money – something else the music industry knows a bit about. But if done correctly with advertisers, developers can then offer their games for free, and with indie games having easy access to consumers and low development costs – this makes advertising cheap. Something both developers and advertisers want and more so developers need to survive and continue to make the titles they want. [more insight and better organized thoughts]

Ubisoft Taking Over Canada

Ubisoft
Ubisoft is setting up a stronghold in Canada with it's announcement of opening a full development studio in Toronto. This puts them in a great position for world domination - because no one expects Canada. With the opening of this office Ubisoft will be in Montreal, Vancouver, Quebec and Toronto. With extending its presence in Toronto they will create 800 new jobs over the next decade. The Ontario government plans to invest CAD $263 million over ten years with Ubisoft's net investment at over half a billion CAD in the studio which will be in operations in late 2009. The studio will work on Triple-A titles and will also build upon the city's existing experience with the film production industry.

EA Mobile Bringing You Summer Blockbusters

Movies

Merchandise - merchandise - merchandise! Star Trek the lunch box, Wolverine the t-shirt, Harry Potter the doll and GIJOE the flamethrower - the kids really love that one. And now, thanks to EA Mobile all these summer blockbusters will be coming to your mobile phone. Yay! Excitement! Now you can step into your favorite characters shoes, mini ones at that, on your mobile phone in these most likely crappy movie to mobile game translations. Who knows maybe the mobile GI JOE will be better than what looks like a steaming pile of horseshit of a movie. But that's just going by the trailer - hopefully the other hour and 45 min isn't as crappy. Star Trek is already available on feature phones and the iPhone and Wolverine is available on feature phones. Harry Potter and GI JOE will be available in July to coincide with the movies because that's how marketing works.

EA and Dr Pepper Team Up For Exclusive Downloadable Content

Nothing like two large companies joining marketing forces in an attempt to sell more soda. EA and Dr Pepper are teaming together in a multi-million dollar agreement to bring Dr Pepper fans exclusive downloadable content. If you're not a Dr Pepper fan well then you're shit out of luck. Beginning next year fans will have access to content for select EA titles through download codes found on more than 500 million Dr. Pepper products. The first title to offer DLC through this new partnership will be The Sims 3. Content could include anything from new levels to in game items to more visits to the dentist.

Ubisoft Expands Digital Distribution With Metaboli

Metaboli

Ubisoft is jumping into the digital distribution pool head first. Individual Ubisoft titles will be available for the first time in a digital-download-to-own format through the UBIshop, gamesplanet.com in europe, and gametap.com in the US. Metaboli steps in as the European leader in the digital distribution of PC games and will support the UBIshop and recently aquired gametap.com in distributing the 47 Ubisoft titles currently in their catalogue. Now all we need are terabyte sized harddrives so we can kill the retail messengers.

Game Crazy iPhone App

Game Crazy

Man I wish we had a Game Crazy in Boston. The closest one is probably in Pawtucket RI. Sadly us Bostonians are stuck with Gamestop's soul sucking clerks and shoddy stores. I feel like I am in a porno shop every time I walk through the door. I actually walked into a Gamestop yesterday to cancel my pre-order for Prototype...just so I could walk down the street and buy it at a Best Buy and I hate Best Buy. Anyway, Game Crazy has released a free iPhone App that allows you to preorder games, check out release dates, and check trade in amounts for games. Just a heads up, if you bought a game less than three weeks ago, sell it on ebay and you will make 10 to 20 dollars more. Trust me, it’s worth the hassle.

id Comes to iPhone

God I need to get an iPhone. I would gladly trade my in my DS, Verizon cell, and my first born child (always the ugliest) for one. id Software is bringing Doom Resurrection to the App store next week and it looks fantastic. This is a great precedent for the iPhone. id and Apple are going to make great bedfellows. Though Doom Resurrection does not support multiplayer, one can imagine that it won't be long until you fire up your phone and play a deathmatch with your buddy while you are sitting on the can. What a wonderful world we live in.

Sex is Violent

Just when I thought I was done spending my hard earned Microsoft points, they pull me back in! Jane's Addiction's album "Nothing's Shocking" will be available for download in Rock Band by this time next week. If for some reason you aren't familiar with this record, I can without reservation recommend the download. This is one of the most important albums of the past thirty years, hands down. Our musical landscape would be vastly different if not for this release. Oh, and on a side note, these are going to be some amazingly fun songs to play. I pity the singer though, Perry Farrell has a falsetto that is going to be murder on your vocal chords. Look for the download April 28th.

Rock Band Going Lego

I'm not sure what the point of this is other than to milk two super franchises, but I guess that is the point. Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, TT Games, The Lego Group, Harmonix and MTV Games have announced Lego Rock Band. The title will be available for the usual suspects - PS3, 360, Wii and DS sometime in 2009. The combination of two already family friendly franchises will make for the ultimate family experience - game will not include arguments over who gets to play drums. I have a feeling when this idea came up the first thought wasn't - "hey, we should make a game that really brings the family together." More like, ok the Rock Band franchise is getting old - and just dishing out new tracks won't keep it fresh - and Lego Mad Max doesn't really ring kid-friendly. There is absolutely no point to this game happening. It's borderline gimmicky by combining two well known franchises that are approaching the end of their prime. But maybe I'm wrong - maybe I'm also a humpback whale that has an opinion and a water proof laptop.

Term 'Gamer' loosing meaning with mainstream gaming

It's surprising that even in the economic situation the world is currently in video games somehow managed to not only stay afloat in sales but actually see an increase towards the end of '08. That mixed with the popularity of the Wii among everyone - not just gamers - has caused a shift in how the industry is viewing its customers. Its not just the "lack-of-sunlight-stuck-in-my-mom's-basement" consumer anymore - now gaming is appealing to the masses. With that is a change on how gaming is marketed and to who - which is obvious, but what isn't as obvious yet is the effect these changes will take on the games themselves. Large audience usually leads to a diluted market of crap all looking the same just to make a buck. The New York Times has a surprisingly short article about the booming industry and how the term 'Gamer' could be on its way out as a way to identify consumers. Basically saying the demographic isn't as specified as it once was.
